What is a Sitemap? Site map DIY teaching and SEO application

[Introduction to Sitemap]

That's right! Sitemap can be understood as a site map, which is very important! In addition to allowing users to see at a glance what content the website contains, Sitemaps are also a great tool for search spiders to know the structure and content of your website. Regardless of the size of the website, it is recommended that websites have a Sitemap, which is beneficial to the user experience and search. Climbing the spider.

  • HTML site map

The HTML site map will present website categories in a column, so that users can quickly browse the content of the website and reach each page.

  • XML site map

The XML sitemap is different from the HTML sitemap. The XML sitemap seems to be written in plain text.

  • Check if there is a Sitemap in the website

After the slash of the website URL, add "/sitemap.xml ", like https://www.abcde.com.tw/sitemap.xml, if it is successfully displayed, it means that the website has a Sitemap!

[Sitemap label introduction]

In Sitemap, we can see that in addition to web links, there are many tags, and each tag actually has a different meaning.

We have picked some of the most common and important tags so that you can easily understand the Sitemap!

  • urlset xmlns   : Essential elements of Sitemap to indicate which version the Sitemap protocol belongs to.

  • url tag : anessential element of a sitemap, write individual URLs in the middle.

  • loc tag : anessential element of a sitemap, including the complete URL.

  • Lastmod tag : not necessary, indicating the last update time of this page.

  • changefreq tag : not necessary, it means the update frequency of "this page", not based on the update frequency of the entire website.

The update frequency can only be filled in with the following tag values:

-Always: indicates that the page has been changing and the update frequency is very high. News sites will choose this tag value.

-Hourly: It will change every hour.

-Daily: It will change every day.

-Weekly: It will change every week. Generally merchants can choose this label.

-Monthly: It will change every month. Monthly websites or websites with new products and longer article cycles can use this tag.

-Yearly: It will change every year.

-Never: Never change.

*Pay special attention. Even if you fill in the always in the changefreq tag, it does not mean that the search spider will crawl at any time. The search spider will only refer to this label, and actually still need to write according to the status of your website.

  • Priority tag : Not necessary, indicating how important this page is in the entire website. The value can be filled in 0.0~1.0. The higher the value, the more important this page is. It is recommended to write 1.0 on the home page and 0.9 for each category page, and then gradually decrease according to the importance.

* The priority value will only be compared with the same site. The natural search result will not be better because the value of a single page is higher. Don't think that it is better to write all 1.0 natural search results.

[Sitemap automatic generation tool]

Each website has dozens, hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of pages at every turn. Can Sitemaps only be written one by one? Are there no automatic tools?

some! With such a useful tool, I recommend two tools for automatically generating sitemaps:

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Online XML Sitemap Generator

In the above article, I will explain in detail how to use these two tools to make a sitemap, so I won’t go into details here!
But I want to remind you that although these two tools can automatically generate sitemaps, the free version of Screaming Frog SEO Spider can only retrieve up to 500 pages , and the
paid version can retrieve the entire website. If your website exceeds the search limit of Screaming Frog SEO Spider, you can switch to Online XML Sitemap Generator so that every page in the website can be searched.

[Sitemap (XML site map) restrictions]

If the website has many pages, can they all be placed in the same Sitemap?

In fact, even if Sitemap is as useful as a map, it still has its limitations:

  • Each sitemap (XML site map) file can only list up to 50,000 URLs (page URLs).
  • Each sitemap (XML site map) file cannot exceed 10MB.

What if your website is similar to an e-commerce platform and there are a lot of pages that need to be put into the sitemap, but it exceeds the sitemap's upper limit of 50,000 URLs?

At this time, you can make more sitemaps, and make sitemap.xml into an overview page to tell the crawler where there is a sitemap to crawl!

Let's see how Google wrote it?

Google wraps up other sitemaps with tags so that search spiders can then crawl other sitemaps.

[Why do you want to make a Sitemap? ]

In the past, Sitemap may not be the place you pay attention to in website SEO optimization, but why do you specifically recommend Sitemap now?
As mentioned earlier, sitemap is a map of a website, which allows crawling spiders to immediately know which web pages you have to be retrieved, but there is another very important purpose- website page
submission .
When you add an article to your website, it may have been several days or even weeks from the time it was added to the search spider. In the past, you can also use Google's off-site submission tool to submit new or modified pages, reminding the crawler to crawl the page again.

But in 2018, Google closed the off-site submission tool, so that every website submission must have a registered webmaster tool to submit.

and! There is a daily limit on the number of URLs submitted by Webmaster Tools. About 10 URLs can be submitted per day. However, if you make a site-wide adjustment and submit one by one URL, how long will it take to submit it?

At this time, sitemap submission comes in handy! As long as you update the sitemap and resubmit, you can let the crawling spider know that your website has been updated, and let the spider know that you want to retrieve the web page again.
